I treat a painting as a space that needs to breathe. I layer oil, charcoal and woven wool, looking for the moment when light and shadow are enough – without a single colour to spare.
I set colour aside so I could better hear what the light is saying.
I paint, draw and weave tapestries exclusively in black and white. What interests me is reduction – how much can disappear from a picture before it starts to speak louder. I work in slow cycles, exploring a single motif in oil, charcoal and wool until nothing is left but light, shadow and the tension between them. I believe a painting is a space where the viewer can rest from the noise – which is why I let my canvases breathe.
